Why UK and US small businesses trail in AI search

Small businesses in Canada and Ireland score more than four points higher than their UK and US counterparts on how often AI assistants recommend them. Same kind of websites, similar technical health, but a measurable gap in AI visibility. In our Q2 2026 benchmark of 500 small businesses across six countries, that country difference was one of the clearest patterns we found.

Here is the part that matters: it is not a website-quality story. Technical health barely moves across these countries. The gap shows up in one place, how often AI assistants actually mention these businesses when a customer asks. This post covers what the country scores are, why the gap exists, and what a business on the wrong side of it can do to close it.

What the country scores actually show

We measured AI search visibility for 500 small businesses across Canada, Ireland, Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, scoring each with ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. The country averages came out like this: Canada 76.9, Ireland 76.5, Australia 74.9, the United States 73.6 and the United Kingdom 72.4. Canada and Ireland sit more than four points ahead of the UK.

Horizontal bar chart: AI search visibility score by country, 3-LLM mean, n=500. Canada 76.9, Ireland 76.5, Australia 74.9, United States 73.6, United Kingdom 72.4. Canada, Ireland and Australia lead; the UK and US trail.

Sample sizes vary, so treat the smaller groups as directional rather than precise. The United Kingdom, at 251 businesses, and the United States, at 168, are the most robust figures, and even between those two well-sampled groups there is a clear gap. This is not noise. The same ordering held across the three assistants we tested.

Why the gap is about mentions, not your website

If this were a website-quality gap, you would expect to see it in technical health scores. You do not. Across these five countries, technical health varies by less than two points, and the AI readiness layer varies even less. The websites are broadly comparable. What differs is how often AI assistants name these businesses when someone asks for a recommendation.

That points to a mentions story. An AI assistant does not just read your website. It builds a picture of your business from the wider web: the reviews, directory listings, press and the network of places your name comes up. The businesses in Canada and Ireland in our sample were not building better websites. They were being talked about more, in the places AI assistants look to judge whether a business is a credible answer in its category.

What closes the gap

For a UK or US small business sitting below the leaders, the catch-up move is not another round of on-site SEO. The on-site basics are already broadly in place. The lever is earned external mentions: getting named in the directories, reviews, local press and partner sites that feed an AI assistant's view of your category, paired with the AI readiness work that helps those mentions be parsed and re-surfaced correctly.

This is the layer AI My Site is built to surface. It scans how AI assistants describe and rank your business, shows you which signals are lifting your competitors above you, and gives you a prioritised list of what to change. The action plan, not just the audit.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Reading the country gap as a website problem. The sites are broadly comparable across these countries. The difference is in external mentions and how AI parses them, not in your page speed or meta tags.
  • Chasing more on-site SEO to catch up. If your technical health is already sound, more of the same will not move the AI-visibility gap. The lever is earned mentions and AI readiness.
  • Assuming a higher-scoring country has nothing to teach you. The leaders show what a stronger mention profile looks like. Treat them as a target to aim at, not a curiosity.
  • Treating a small-sample country as gospel. Canada and Ireland lead on smaller samples, so read them as directional. The UK and US figures are the robust ones to benchmark against.

How long does this take

Building an earned-mention profile is slower than editing a web page, and anyone promising an overnight jump is guessing. In practice, businesses that work through a prioritised list of mention and readiness fixes tend to see movement over a 4 to 12 week window, depending on how active their category is and how much they apply. What the data supports is simpler: the country gap is real, it is specific, and it is closeable with focused work rather than a rebuild.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries did you measure?

We scanned 500 small businesses across Canada, Ireland, Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, scoring each with ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini during Q2 2026.

Why do Canada and Ireland score higher?

The gap is in AI visibility, how often assistants mention these businesses, not in website quality. Technical health is comparable across countries. The leaders are simply being talked about more across the wider web that AI assistants read.

Does this mean my website is fine?

Possibly, on the basics. The country pattern suggests the next gain for most UK and US businesses is in earned external mentions and AI readiness, not another on-site SEO pass.

How reliable are the smaller-country numbers?

Treat them as directional. The United Kingdom, at 251 businesses, and the United States, at 168, are the robust samples. The leaders sit on smaller groups but point consistently in the same direction.

See where you sit

If your business is in the UK or US, the useful question is how far you sit from the leaders and which mentions would close the distance. We have published the full Q2 2026 State of AI Search benchmark, with the breakdown by country, industry and platform, so you can see where your category sits and what a stronger AI mention profile looks like.
