How to get your small business recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants
Nobody can honestly promise that an AI assistant will recommend your business. What you can do is make it easy for assistants to find you, to understand what you do, and to see that other people vouch for you. Say plainly on your website what you do, where and for whom; make your pages easy for machines to read; answer the questions your buyers ask; and be listed, reviewed and mentioned in the places assistants check. In our own checks of small business websites, the firms that get named are the ones with a footprint beyond their own pages.
Five things you can work on
1. Say what you do, where and for whom
Assistants need a plain answer to "what is this business?" on your own pages. Vague slogans leave them guessing.
2. Make your pages easy for machines to read
Text in images, missing descriptions and missing structured data all hide what your pages say.
3. Answer the questions your buyers ask
Short, direct answers are the easiest thing for an assistant to quote.
4. Be listed where assistants look
Directories and your Google Business Profile tell assistants you are a real business in a real place.
5. Get reviews and mentions from other people
What others say about you carries more weight than what you say about yourself.
What One Site does for you
- · We rebuild your website on our platform and host it.
- · Every fortnight we check how you show on Google and whether AI assistants name you.
- · We check whether ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini name you, and which firms they name instead.
- · We fix the technical things ourselves and tell you.
- · Up to 4 new pages or blog posts a fortnight, each with a preview.
- · You approve what your visitors see.
What only you can do
Some of what Google and AI assistants look at lives outside your website. We tell you which of these matter for you, and tick them off on your site page as they’re done:
- · Testimonials from your clients
- · Your Google Business Profile
- · The directories your buyers use
- · Articles, press and links from partners
