WordPress AI SEO audit

See how ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini see your WordPress site today — and get a plain-English plan to fix what’s holding it back, with the exact plugin and menu for every step.

SHORT ANSWER

How do you do an AI SEO audit on a WordPress site?

To audit a WordPress site for AI search, check three things: that AI crawlers can reach and read your pages (WordPress renders HTML server-side, which helps — but your robots.txt and any page-builder blocks matter), that every important page has a clear title, meta description and valid structured data (on WordPress that usually means an SEO plugin such as Yoast or Rank Math), and that your content answers real customer questions in plain, quotable language. Then ask ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini a buyer’s question about your market and see whether you’re named. AI My Site checks all of this in one scan and links each fix to a step-by-step WordPress guide.

WHAT IT CHECKS

What a WordPress AI SEO audit checks

Three scores, each measuring something different — the same on any platform. Here’s exactly what goes into each one.

Technical Health

Can search engines and AI crawlers reach, read and index your pages at all?

  • Crawlability and indexing — anything quietly blocking your pages from being seen
  • robots.txt and AI-crawler access (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and the rest)
  • XML sitemap present and valid
  • Canonical tags and duplicate-URL signals
  • Title tags and meta descriptions — present, unique, well-formed
  • Structured data (Schema.org / JSON-LD) present and valid
  • Whether your content is readable without JavaScript

AI Readiness

How well your pages give an AI assistant what it needs to understand and quote you — judged for ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.

  • Answer-first copy and FAQ / Q&A blocks that AI can lift cleanly
  • Question-phrased headings that match how customers actually ask
  • Clear, consistent facts about your business (what you do, where, for whom)
  • Valid, relevant structured data on your key pages — not just the homepage
  • Descriptive image alt text and media
  • Depth across your important pages, not a thin homepage alone

AI Visibility

What the assistants actually say about you today — measured, not guessed.

  • How clearly ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can describe your business from what they already know
  • The real test: we ask each assistant a buyer’s question from your market — with no brand name in it — and record whether you’re named
  • Which competitors get named instead, and what sources get cited
  • Tracked over time so you can see it move (or not) after you make changes

A note on honesty: the two on-page scores are judged against a fixed rubric, so small moves of a few points between scans are normal — we only flag a change when it clears that noise. And AI Visibility measures whether assistants can describe and name you, not a guaranteed ranking. No honest audit can promise you a spot.

ON WORDPRESS

How to audit your WordPress site, step by step

WordPress gives you full control — but a lot of it lives in plugins rather than core settings. Here’s the order to check things, with where to click.

  1. 1

Install or open your SEO plugin

WordPress core does not give you per-page SEO title and meta-description fields — you set those with a plugin. Yoast SEO and Rank Math are the two standards. Once installed, each page gets an SEO box below the editor where you set the title tag and meta description; both also offer bulk editors for doing this across many pages at once.

  2. 2

Set unique titles and descriptions on your key pages

In Yoast, use the “Edit snippet” panel; in Rank Math, “Edit Snippet”. Give every important page a specific title and a description that reads like a real answer, not keyword soup. Set site-wide templates under the plugin’s Titles & Meta settings so new pages inherit sensible defaults.

  3. 3

Turn on structured data — and check for duplicates

Both plugins can emit Schema.org JSON-LD (Organization, WebSite, Article, Breadcrumb; plus FAQ/HowTo blocks). The common WordPress gotcha: your theme and your SEO plugin can both output Organization schema, which conflicts. Pick one source and disable the other so AI gets one clean set of facts.

  4. 4

Check your robots.txt and AI-crawler access

WordPress serves a virtual robots.txt by default. Edit it in Yoast (Tools → File editor) or Rank Math (General Settings → Edit robots.txt) — no FTP needed, unless a physical robots.txt exists in your site root, in which case remove it first. Make sure you’re not blocking the AI search bots (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot). These are separate from the training crawlers, so you can allow retrieval even if you block training.

  5. 5

    Confirm your sitemap is submitted

WordPress generates a sitemap at /wp-sitemap.xml, but Yoast and Rank Math replace it with their own (usually /sitemap_index.xml). Whichever is live, submit it in Google Search Console under Indexing → Sitemaps so your pages are found and re-crawled after changes.

  6. 6

    Watch performance and rendering

Plugin bloat is the classic WordPress drag — every extra plugin adds scripts and database queries that slow pages and can push content behind JavaScript. Since many AI crawlers don’t run JavaScript, make sure your main text is in the initial HTML (view source and check it’s there), and keep your plugin stack lean.

The WordPress trap: it depends entirely on your setup

Because so much of WordPress SEO lives in plugins and themes, two WordPress sites can score wildly differently. Duplicate schema from theme + plugin, a physical robots.txt blocking your plugin’s editor, and page-builder content that only renders in JavaScript are the three issues we see most. An audit that knows WordPress checks for exactly these — not just generic advice.

That’s the manual version. AI My Site does all of this in one scan — across all your pages and all three assistants — then ranks every fix and links each one to a step-by-step WordPress guide.

WordPress AI SEO — common questions

Do I need Yoast or Rank Math for AI SEO on WordPress?

You need something to set per-page titles, meta descriptions and structured data, because WordPress core doesn’t give you those fields. Yoast and Rank Math are the two standard choices and both have capable free tiers. It doesn’t matter greatly which you pick — what matters is that only one of them (not also your theme) is emitting your Organization schema, to avoid conflicts.

Is WordPress good for getting recommended by AI?

It can be. WordPress renders pages server-side, so AI crawlers that don’t run JavaScript can read your content — a real advantage. The risks are self-inflicted: plugin bloat slowing the site, conflicting schema, and content locked inside JavaScript page-builders. Fix those and WordPress is a strong base for AI visibility.

Will structured data get my WordPress site into Google’s AI Overviews?

Not on its own. Google is explicit that no special schema, file or markup makes you appear in AI Overviews — the same indexing, quality and E-E-A-T signals as normal Search apply, and your page simply needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Structured data helps machines understand your pages and can earn rich results; it’s a helper, not a switch.

How long until changes show up in AI answers?

Realistically weeks to a few months. Search engines and AI systems need to re-crawl and re-evaluate your site, and being named for questions that don’t mention you depends on signals from across the web. Anyone promising overnight results is overpromising.
